Detailed Description

Johns Hopkins University provides financial support to eligible undergraduate students through need-based scholarships and merit scholarships.

For international applicants, need-based aid is available but admissions are need-aware. This means an international applicant's financial circumstances may be considered during the admissions process if they request financial aid. Hopkins nevertheless states that it will meet 100% of demonstrated financial need for admitted international students and does so without loans.

Demonstrated need is not a fixed scholarship amount. Johns Hopkins evaluates the family's financial circumstances to determine what the family can reasonably contribute towards the cost of attendance, then financial aid is used to address the remaining demonstrated need.

International students who believe they may need financial assistance at any point during their four undergraduate years must request financial aid when applying as first-year applicants. International students who do not request aid during the first-year application process cannot normally apply for Hopkins need-based aid later.

Johns Hopkins also offers a limited number of merit scholarships based on academic and personal achievement. All applicants are automatically considered for these awards, regardless of citizenship, and there is no separate merit-scholarship application. Examples on the official scholarship page include the Hodson Trust Scholarship and the Charles R. Westgate Scholarship in Engineering.

Eligibility Criteria

For first-year undergraduate admission, applicants generally must:

  • Be currently in high school; or
  • Have graduated from high school or earned a GED and have fewer than 12 semester-based credits from another institution after high school.
  • Not already hold a bachelor's degree.
  • Meet Johns Hopkins undergraduate admission requirements.
  • Submit the required SAT or ACT scores for first-year admission.

For international applicants seeking need-based financial aid:

  • International first-year applicants may request financial aid.
  • Applicants expecting to need financial assistance during their four years at Hopkins must request aid as first-year applicants.
  • Applicants must indicate that they are seeking financial aid on the admissions application.
  • Applicants seeking need-based aid must submit the CSS Profile by the applicable financial-aid deadline.
  • Applicants unable to complete the CSS Profile may use the free Johns Hopkins University International Student Financial Aid Application as an alternative.
  • All international applicants must submit the International Student Certification of Finances (COF).
  • International transfer applicants are not currently eligible for Johns Hopkins financial aid.
