Detailed Description
Aalto University’s Rotor Lab at the Department of Mechanical Engineering is recruiting a Master’s thesis worker for the VIcTOR – Virtual Torque Sensing for Maritime Powertrains research project.
The project is conducted in close collaboration with Wärtsilä and investigates new methods for estimating torque and torsional response in maritime powertrains without relying on expensive dedicated torque sensors.
The research combines engineering modelling, optimisation, machine learning and embedded control systems.
The selected thesis worker will investigate methods that use encoder measurements together with available engine or generator data to estimate unknown torque and the full torsional response of a maritime powertrain.
Two major methodological areas are explored: convex optimisation-based torque estimation and physics-informed learning.
The work also involves modelling and simulation using industry-standard tools such as Matlab/Simulink, with potential use of Python, C and other embedded-system technologies.
Wärtsilä provides access to operational powertrain data, measurement systems, engines, test rigs and industry expertise. Research work is expected to take place both at Aalto University and Wärtsilä’s Vaasa STH laboratory.
For the Master’s thesis phase, the official vacancy lists a gross salary of €2,622 per month for full-time employment lasting a maximum of six months.
The vacancy also provides a possible route into doctoral research after graduation. Applicants interested in continuing to the doctoral phase must separately satisfy Aalto University’s doctoral-programme eligibility conditions.
