Peace Boat Volunteer Interpreter 2027

The Peace Boat Volunteer Interpreter Programme is organised by Peace Boat, a Japan-based international NGO working on peace, human rights and sustainability. Peace Boat carries out many of its educational and advocacy activities through international voyages aboard a passenger ship.

Volunteer interpreters support communication between participants, guest educators and communities encountered during the voyage. Their work includes simultaneous and consecutive interpretation during lectures, meetings, forums and informal gatherings, as well as interpretation during programmes and tours in ports of call.

Volunteers may also translate handouts, assist communication between Japanese-speaking and non-Japanese-speaking participants, support onboard language programmes and organise their own workshops, classes or activities.

The 126th Global Voyage departs from Yokohama on 7 April 2027 and travels through destinations across Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas before returning to Japan. The official volunteer guidelines require successful interpreters to remain available until arrival in Kobe on 24 July 2027.

This is a volunteer role rather than paid employment. It is particularly suited to applicants interested in interpretation, languages, international issues, intercultural communication, sustainability and Peace Boat’s wider educational work.

Peace Boat lists the following requirements for Voyage 126 volunteer interpreters.

• Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
• High school students are not eligible.
• Applicants must be fluent in two or more required interpreting languages.
• Applicants must be available for the entire voyage and the pre-voyage orientation period.
• Applicants must be able to participate physically in an orientation in the Tokyo/Yokohama area approximately one week before departure.
• Applicants should be in sound health and able to perform volunteer interpreting duties.
• Applicants should have strong interest in and knowledge of global issues such as poverty, discrimination, sustainable development, civil society, the environment, regional conflicts and energy issues.
• Applicants must be willing to prioritise the process of obtaining all necessary visas.
• Applicants must support Peace Boat’s aims and be motivated to participate with a volunteer spirit.
• Previous interpreting experience or interpreting training is preferred but not compulsory.
• Additional language ability, particularly languages relevant to countries visited during the voyage, may strengthen an application.

Current Voyage 126 language combinations include:

• Japanese-English
• English-Korean
• Japanese-Korean
• Japanese-Mandarin Chinese
• Certain three-language combinations involving Japanese, Chinese, Korean and English
• Spanish in addition to eligible language combinations

Voyage 126 is not recruiting the English-Mandarin Chinese-only combination.

Peace Boat states that formal language tests are not compulsory. Previous successful applicants have typically demonstrated high proficiency, with examples including JLPT N1 for Japanese, TOEFL iBT 100 or TOEIC 900 for English, DELE B2 for Spanish, TOPIK 6 for Korean and HSK 6 for Chinese. These are reference levels rather than mandatory test-score requirements.

Peace Boat confirms the following conditions for successful volunteer interpreters.

• Room and board during the voyage.
• Exemption from voyage fees.
• International tourist tax covered through the voyage-fee exemption.
• Port charges covered.
• Tips covered.
• Visa fees generally covered by Peace Boat, although exceptions may apply.
• Costs of programmes in ports that volunteers are required to attend as interpreters are covered.
• Practical experience in consecutive and simultaneous interpreting.
• International exposure through onboard educational programmes and port activities.
• Opportunities to develop intercultural communication and translation skills.
• Experience working with guest educators and participants from different countries.

No salary is paid because this is a volunteer position.

• Approximately one A4-page essay explaining why they would like to join Peace Boat as a volunteer interpreter.
• The same essay must be submitted in every language for which the applicant is applying.
