Detailed Description

The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships 2027–28 are awarded by the Swiss Confederation to promote international academic exchange and research cooperation between Switzerland and other countries. Recipients are selected by the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS/ESKAS).

The programme has three main routes for 2027–28: Research Fellowships, PhD Scholarships and Art Scholarships. Postdoctoral scholarships are no longer offered from the 2027–28 academic year.

Research Fellowship

The Research Fellowship is designed for highly qualified early-career researchers from any academic discipline who are pursuing a PhD outside Switzerland. It enables scholars to undertake a full-time research project at an eligible Swiss institution for between 6 and 12 months. An academic supervisor in Switzerland is mandatory.

PhD Scholarship

The PhD Scholarship supports highly qualified researchers who have completed a Master’s degree and wish to pursue a doctorate at a Swiss university or recognised research institute. The scholarship initially covers 12 months and may be renewed twice, allowing support for up to 36 months subject to satisfactory academic progress.

Art Scholarship

Art Scholarships are available to talented applicants seeking their first Master’s degree in an artistic field at a Swiss art school or conservatory. Unlike the research scholarships, art scholarships are available only to applicants from selected countries.

All three scholarship categories currently provide CHF 2,450 per month to contribute towards one person’s basic living expenses. This scholarship is not treated as a salary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is IELTS required?

FCS does not specify an IELTS score as a general scholarship requirement. However, your chosen university or programme may impose its own language or admission requirements, which should be checked separately.

Is there an application fee?

No. The official Swiss Government scholarship information states that applications are free of charge. Applicants should be cautious of organisations or individuals requesting payment for the scholarship application.

Can international applicants apply?

Yes. The programme currently covers applicants from 183 countries, but availability and scholarship categories depend on the applicant’s country of origin.

Is this a fully funded scholarship?

It provides substantial financial support, including CHF 2,450 per month and additional benefits, but it does not automatically cover tuition or semester fees. It is therefore safer not to market it simply as a full-tuition scholarship.

Do I need a Swiss professor before applying?

Yes, for Research Fellowship and PhD applications. Applicants must obtain support from an eligible academic supervisor in Switzerland before submitting the scholarship application.

Can I apply for a regular Master’s degree?

Generally, the research scholarships are not general Master’s scholarships. The Master’s route is specifically the Art Scholarship for eligible applicants seeking their first Master’s degree in an artistic field and is available only to selected countries.

Are postdoctoral scholarships available for 2027–28?

No. The Swiss Federal Council confirmed that postdoctoral scholarships are no longer awarded from the 2027–28 academic year.

What is the age requirement?

For the Research Fellowship, PhD Scholarship and Art Scholarship, applicants must have been born after 31 December 1991.

What is the application deadline?

There is no single global deadline. Deadlines depend on the applicant’s country of origin and are listed in the official FCS country tables.

When does the scholarship begin?

The official start date for the 2027–28 Research Fellowship, PhD Scholarship and Art Scholarship is 1 September 2027.
